Spain Journey | eCamps BVI hosts major fundraiser
eCamps BVI recently held its first major fundraiser to raise funds to assist with the expenses of the 2015 language immersion Learning Journey to Spain.
The event was also geared toward assisting the campers to raise a portion of the $2500.00 that they have committed to contributing to the Pediatric Ward of the new Peebles Hospital.
Dubbed the “Family Spring Festival”, the event was geared mainly toward families with children of all ages, with a number of activities taking place simultaneously.
Lots of food and drinks, face painting, balloon art, a very popular candy booth, t-shirt painting, bounce houses, toys and more. A special feature for adults was the Tea Party and Hat competition, with over $3,000 in prizes awarded, thanks to community partners.
eCampers were required to work the respective booths during the day.
Leading up to the event, the campers also sold raffle tickets, with the proceeds accruing directly to their respective accounts. At least four campers earned in excess of $1,000 each, making their learning journey that less costly.
“We realize the importance of having these children work toward these experiences”, said Portia Harrigan, director of eCamps BVI.
“ Once they are incentivized, they can devise all kinds of strategies to achieve their goals. Children place greater value on what they have earned and it is important for them to know that life gives no free rides.”
Overall, campers raised a total of $12,700.00, each one being rewarded based on his or her efforts, receiving anywhere from zero dollars to as much $1,407.00.
“We want the children to learn that you get as much as you put in”, said Harrigan.
“And, we make no exceptions. It does not matter if parents can write a cheque. The kids must understand the value of work.”
eCamps BVI will be hosting at least one additional fundraiser prior to this year’s trip and thanks the community in advance for their kind and generous support. eCamps BVI is extremely grateful to all of our sponsors and supporters of the event and of our continued efforts to develop truly global citizens.
